Fundraiser for Gingerella scholarship fund slated for Tuesday in Mystic

Mystic _ Mango’s Wood-fired Pizza Co. in Olde Mistick Village will donate 20 percent of customer checks on Tuesday night to a baseball scholarship fund set up at Fitch High School in Groton in memory of the late Joey Gingerella.

Gingerella, 24, was shot and killed outside a local bar in December when he came to the aid of a woman who was being assaulted in the parking lot by her boyfriend. That man, Dante Hughes of Groton, has been charged with murder and is awaiting trial.

Gingerella, who was a former pitcher for the Fitch team, was well known for speaking to groups about his battle to overcome an addiction to prescription pain relievers.

The benefit will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. The donation will be valid for both take-out and dine-in orders. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase throughout the night, with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the scholarship fund.
