Mystic River Historical Society commemorates 100th anniversary of World War I

Mystic — The Mystic River Historical Society has published a special edition of its Portersville Press newspaper to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mystic’s participation in World War I.

The newspaper contains stories about a local woman’s time in France with the Army Nurse Corps and the service of many members of the Mystic Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 in the war.

The newspaper was mentioned in the Connecticut State Library’s March 2017 edition of Connecticut and the Great War and was called “an amazing piece of work” by Liz Shapiro, executive director of Connecticut League of History Organizations.

The historical society also has World War I exhibits at the Mystic & Noank Library, which include a gas mask and trench periscope.

In addition, it is also sponsoring a World War I commemoration lecture series.

On Wednesday, Catherine Deichmann will present a program titled “Over Here: Mystic in the Great War,” which will discuss the impact of the World War I on daily life in Mystic.

On April 26, George King III will discuss “Mystic in WWI: Ambulance 255, the American Volunteer” about the little-known story of how private Americans found a way to help the French before America decided to enter World War I.

And on May 24, Eury Cantillo will discuss U.S. submarines in World War I.

All programs will be held at 7 p.m. at the Mystic Congregational Church Hall.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
