New London — Firefighters rescued two workers who were doing repairs under the Gold Star Bridge Tuesday afternoon when the telescopic lift truck they were using failed.

New London Fire Department Battalion Chief Roger Tompkins said Tuesday that the two men worked for a state Department of Transportation contractor and had just started using the lift three weeks ago.

A motor in the lift failed, leaving them stuck 70 feet in the air, Tompkins said.

New London firefighters brought a ladder truck to Cole St., and closed the street for about 20 minutes before they brought the workers down. Neither man was injured, Tompkins said.
