Norwich Public Utilities to repair collapsed sewer pipe Thursday

Norwich — Norwich Public Utilities on Thursday will replace a section of collapsed sewer line on Huntington Place that will require removal of motor vehicles from the street and closure of the entire street for much of the day, NPU officials said Wednesday.

The collapse occurred about mid-way down the street, which has 11 residential customers. Sewer service to the homes has not been disrupted, NPU spokesman Chris Riley said Wednesday.

On Thursday, crews will remove and replace an 8-to-10-foot long pipe while working in a trench approximately 7 feet deep in the roadway. The work is expected to be completed by 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

While this work is being completed, vehicle traffic in either direction on Huntington Place will not be possible, NPU foreman Bill Dewey wrote in a letter to residents Wednesday. Dewey asked all vehicle owners to remove their vehicles from the street by 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

“It is critical that NPU crews repair this sewer line as soon as possible to prevent the damaged pipe from impacting the health and safety of the neighborhood,” Dewey wrote in the letter. “We apologize for any inconvenience this emergency repair may cause in your daily routine.”
