New London school officials to announce response to budget cuts

New London – Members of the New London Public School district are holding a press conference at 4 p.m. Thursday in response to the $1 million cut to the Board Of Education budget.

The cut was made by the Board of Finance and later passed by the City Council in its second of three readings of the budget. Because of the city’s defunding of a $500,000 school maintenance line item in its budget, school officials said the result is a $1,515,000 drop from the Board of Education’s proposed budget.

Expected to speak at Thursday’s press conference is Superintendent Manuel Rivera, Board of Education President Scott Garbini, Greater New London NAACP Branch President and local union president Richard Baez.

The press conference starts at 4 p.m. in the lecture hall of the Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
