Norwich Public Utilities employees were transferring American shad on Friday from below the Greeneville Dam to the Taftville reservoir. As part of its operating permit with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, NPU is required to relocate at least 10 percent of the American shad that are unable to swim through its dam on the Shetucket River every year.
So far, more than 1,200 shad have been moved upstream in the program, which continues through June.
