    Giving shad a hand

Norwich Public Utilities senior mechanic Eric Dugan scoops a fish into the water as an American shad jumps into the water on Friday, May 19, 2017, as employees transfer the fish from below the Greeneville Dam to the Taftville reservoir. As part of its operating permit with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, NPU is required to relocate at least 10 percent of the American shad that are unable to swim through its dam on the Shetucket River every year. So far, more than 1,200 shad have been moved upstream in the program, which continues through June. (Sarah Gordon/The Day)
