Lyman Allyn to host free sculpting workshop Friday in New London

New London — The Lyman Allyn Art Museum is hosting a free sculpting workshop for kids from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Parade Plaza.

"Sculpting New London" will be an art-making workshop for schoolchildren taught by New London artist Kat Murphy. Inspired by the sculptures of David Smalley, now on exhibition in Lyman Allyn’s galleries and outdoors on the museum grounds and campus of Connecticut College, the workshop participants will create art using high-density foam and other lightweight and easily shaped materials.

The workshop was organized by Jose Garaycochea, the director of Expressiones Cultural Center in New London and trustee of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum.

The free workshop is part of a larger celebration of New London and its arts, and immediately follows the conclusion of the New England Foundation for the Arts conference and the Creative Communities Exchange conference, also being held in downtown New London.

The Lyman Allyn will be hosting another free community event, Summer Fest, at the museum from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 24. Summer Fest will feature the music of some of the region’s great performers, as well as food trucks, family activities, face painting, balloon creations, art projects and more.
