Mohegans to host NCAI conference, Interior secretary next week

Mohegan — U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke will attend next week’s National Congress of American Indians’ 2017 Mid-Year Conference & Marketplace at Mohegan Sun.

Zinke is scheduled to speak Tuesday, as are Mohegan Chairman Kevin Brown, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut. Lynn Malerba, chief of the Mohegan Tribe, will give an invocation.

“We are looking forward to hosting Secretary Zinke during NCAI Mid-Year,” NCAI President Brian Cladoosby said in a statement. “This year’s theme, ‘Sovereign Infrastructure: Building our Communities through our Values,’ is an important conversation we will continue to build upon with the Department of the Interior and the administration in the years to come.”

The Interior Department has more than 70,000 employees and supervises 20 percent of the nation’s lands, including national parks, monuments and wildlife refuges. It oversees the development of conventional and renewable energy supplies on public lands and waters; is the largest supplier and manager of water in the 17 Western states; and upholds trust responsibilities to the 567 federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes.

Zinke previously represented Montana in the U.S. House of Representatives. A fifth-generation Montanan, he spent 23 years as a Navy SEAL officer.
