New London firefighters called to Mr. G's for electrical fire

New London — New London firefighters had to cut into the roof of Mr. G's Restaurant on Thursday night after an electrical fire was reported there.

Fire Battalion Chief Edward Sargent said firefighters received a call about 7:10 p.m. reporting smoke and "an electrical smell" in the building at 452 Williams St., in the Hodges Square area of the city.

Firefighters called Eversource to cut power to the building so they could find the source of the smoke, he said, and the power was cut about about 8 p.m. Ledge Light Health District, which serves as the city's health department, also was called.

Sargent said the fire was located and contained around an electric meter inside the building, which is an older structure. He said firefighters had to cut open a small section of the roof and ceiling to make sure the fire hadn't spread inside the walls. The city building official also was on the scene.

Williams Street was closed around the restaurant for about an hour but was reopened later Thursday night. Firefighters cleared the scene about 9 p.m., Sargent said, though Eversource was still on the scene working with the restaurant to get temporary power up and running with a generator.

No further information was available. The restaurant was not able to be reached by telephone Thursday night, as the line appeared to be out of service.
