Groton expands camp offerings this summer

Groton — Groton Parks and Recreation will offer more than 60 sections of sports and specialty camps this summer, including advanced soccer for travel players, PGA golf and Young Hacks Academy, a national program that teaches computer and leadership skills.

The programs include seven weeks of day camp, field trips for teens and specialty camps in areas ranging from sailing to sewing. Camps are open to nonresidents.

"We aim to offer a wide selection of camps so that every child will find something that interests them," Program Supervisor Eileen Cicchese said in a news release.

Young Hacks Academy, a camp for children ages 9 to 12 and a national program, teaches computer programming, video game design and problem solving. Children discuss real world challenges like climate change and ways to pitch and present ideas.

Groton also added advanced PGA golf this year, for golfers ages 10 to 21, which will be taught by golf pros at Shennecossett Golf Course.

Day camps will be offered at three sites: Claude Chester Elementary School, S.B. Butler Elementary School and William Seely School. The recreation department added "minion camp" for children ages 4-5 this year in response to parent feedback, said Kate Bradley, program supervisor for marketing and special events. Field trips offered at day camp programs will be optional for families, she said.

For teens, the department is offering adventure camp and summer day trips to Lake Compounce, Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park and Six Flags.
