Waterford finance director leaves for East Lyme schools post

Waterford — Maryanna Stevens, who left a job as Stonington’s finance director three years ago to take the same post in Waterford, is on the move again.

Stevens has resigned from her job heading Waterford’s finance department to take a position managing the East Lyme schools district’s finances.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for me to work in my community,” Stevens, who lives in East Lyme and previously worked for the Norwich school district, said last week.

She will serve as East Lyme Public Schools' director of finance, marketing and growth management, she said.

Stevens came to Waterford in 2014 after nearly 12 years as Stonington’s finance director. She said she leaves Waterford after overseeing the town’s transition to a new accounting system to replace an outdated system.

She said she was looking forward to working close to home and returning to a job in a school district.

“I’m very happy,” she said. “It’s great, supportive environment.”

Waterford First Selectman Daniel Steward said Stevens resigned last month and that Linda Savitsky, a consultant who replaced Stevens in Stonington on an interim basis when Stevens left that town, will now follow her in Waterford until the town hires a permanent replacement.

Stevens succeeded Rudie Beers, who had also come to Waterford from Stonington and worked as Waterford’s finance director for more than a dozen years before retiring 2014.

“We’ll miss her,” Steward said of Stevens.

Waterford is now accepting applications for the post, but has not yet seen an enthusiastic response.

“There are not a lot of applications,” he said.
