Water main break closes portion of Route 161 in East Lyme

East Lyme — A small section of Route 161, between Mostowy Road and Rocco Drive, was closed Thursday as town water crews were working to repair a water main break.

The break was reported about 1:30 p.m., about the same time Eversource was informed of an issue with a transformer in the same area. East Lyme Fire Marshal Dick Morris said there were a lot of lightning strikes in the area at the time, one possible cause.

About 16 homes were without water as of 6:30 p.m. Eversource reported 49 homes without power throughout the town. Police have set up a detour route around the closed off area of Route 161.
