Electric Boat delivers future submarine Colorado to the Navy

Groton — Electric Boat on Thursday delivered the future attack submarine Colorado to the Navy.

It is the 15th Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine to be delivered to the Navy. Virginia-class submarines, which cost about $2.7 billion each, provide the Navy with the capabilities required to retain undersea dominance well into the 21st century, according to a news release from EB.

"This delivery demonstrates the skill and commitment of everyone involved in the Virginia-class submarine program," EB President Jeff Geiger said. "Delivering Colorado is a significant achievement that helps the Navy meet its shipbuilding goals and ensures our continuing success as a business."

EB, with its primary facilities in New London, Groton and Quonset Point, R.I., and a workforce of about 15,800 employees, builds Virginia submarines with Newport News Shipbuilding under a teaming agreement, with each alternating delivery.

Virginia-class submarines displace 7,835 tons, with a hull length of 377 feet and a diameter of 34 feet. They are capable of speeds in excess of 25 knots and can dive to a depth greater than 800 feet, while carrying Mark 48 advanced capability torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
