Sub base assault suspect to undergo psychological evaluation

A federal magistrate judge has ordered a competency evaluation for Gary Ray Brunache, the Norwich man who assaulted two Department of Defense officers in November at the Naval Submarine Base New London.

On Jan. 26, U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Smith ordered an evaluation by "an appropriate psychiatric facility" to determine whether Brunache is mentally competent to stand trial.

Brunache is charged with two counts of assaulting a federal law enforcement officer.
