Two Coast Guard Academy cadets killed in New Jersey car crash were on spring break

First Class Cadet Soso Makaridze and Third Class Cadet Bersarian Gorjoladze, both international cadets from the Republic of Georgia, were identified this afternoon as the two Coast Guard Academy cadets who were victims of an early Saturday morning crash Saturday on Route 31 north of Trenton, N.J.

Academy spokesman David Santos released the names of the victims along with the name of the driver of the vehicle, First Class Cadet Joel MacArthur, of Oley, Pa. Santos said that MacArthur has been treated for his injuries and released.

Last week, first class cadets at the academy took part in billet night when they found out their first assignment for after graduation. It was announced then that Makaridze was going to be returning to his home country to serve in the Georgian Air Force. On his Facebook page, Makaridze posted a picture from billet night of him and a fellow cadet with the caption “Future Officers of Georgian Air Force and Army.” On Facebook, he’d listed his hometown as Tbilisi, Georgia, and one of his profile pictures is of him standing in Times Square in New York City.

On Gorjoladze’s Facebook page, he listed the New England Patriots and the soccer team Real Madrid under sports that he liked. And he listed Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry and Argentine tango composer Ástor Piazzolla as music that he liked. In one of his profile pictures, Gorjoladze was standing in the wardroom of a submarine.

The accident occurred just after cadets had begun a week of spring break.

Santos said all other cadets have been notified of the deaths and that counseling will be offered and memorial services planned once they return to the New London campus on March 15.

Many Academy faculty and staff came to campus Saturday in response to the news. There is much sorrow among cadets and Academy personnel over the tragedy, he said.

“The Academy community is grieving the loss of two of our cadets,” Academy Superintendent RADM Sandra Stosz said in a statement Saturday evening. “We are deeply saddened by their passing and are fully committed to helping the Corps of Cadets cope with this tragedy.”

According to a news release from the Township of Hopewell Police Department, at 12:02 a.m. Saturday police and emergency personnel responded to the crash. When officers arrived they found that a Chevy Cobalt and a Ford Focus had collided, the release says.

The investigation into the crash has revealed that the Chevy Cobalt, driven by MacArthur, was traveling southbound along Route 31 while the Ford Focus, driven by 28-year-old Devon Tomb, of Flanders, N.J. was traveling northbound. The cars collided in the northbound lane causing Tomb’s car to leave the roadway. MacArthur’s car came to a stop in the middle of the road.

MacArthur was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center. The front seat passenger in MacArthur’s car was pronounced dead at the scene. The rear seat passenger was extricated from the car and was flown to Capital Health where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Police did not say what seats Makaridze and Third Class Cadet Bersarian Gorjoladze, were sitting in.

Tomb and his passenger, Christine Thompson, 27, also of Flanders, were hospitalized with injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Hopewell Police Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
