Submarine veterans to visit sick children

Groton — In honor of U.S. submariners who gave their lives for their country, the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI) celebrates Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week.

This is the week that includes Veterans Day, and provides a special focus on conducting visits to child care facilities nationwide.

Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) is a community outreach program with the goal of bringing smiles to children facing medical challenges.

During the year, Submarine Veterans at USSVI Bases around the country visit kids in children's hospitals, cancer hospitals, hospices, child psychiatric facilities, Ronald McDonald Houses and camps for sick children.

On these visits, they make the children "Honorary Submariners" and provide them with caring attention, "Honorary Submariner" caps and certificates, as well as other items the children might enjoy.

Submarine veterans have brought comfort and joy to more than 18,000 sick children nationally.

Over the past six years USSVI's Groton Base Submarine Veterans have visited sick children at child care facilities throughout Connecticut. The facilities visited handle more than 90 percent of the state's sick kids.
