    Westerly veteran gets long overdue medal

    Westerly — Joseph G. Chan, 96, was recognized and honored for his Army service in the Korean War, during a medal ceremony Wednesday in the Municipal Courtroom at Town Hall.

    Rhode Island U.S. Sen. Jack Reed held the ceremony, where Chan was presented with the National Defense Service Medal.

    Chan served as a cook; after being honorably discharged in 1954, he returned to Westerly and opened up his own restaurant, Chen's Village Restaurant.
