    USS Miami Class joins the fleet

    Groton — Seventy-one sailors of "Class 16160" USS Miami (SSN-751) graduated from Basic Enlisted Submarine School on March 18.

    Seaman Michael Woodhead was class honor graduate with a 97.75 GPA.

    Fireman Apprentice Joshua Knapp received the Navy Core Values Award for best exemplifying the standards and expectations of a U.S. Navy sailor.

    Machinist Mate 3rd Class James Carlier was recipient of the Submarine Heritage Award.

    Fireman Recruit Grey Wreford, Fireman Recruit Matthew Sanford, Seaman Recruit Najher Ray, Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Tyler Kantorczyk, Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Kevin Fail, Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Alexander Walter, Machinist Mate 3rd Class Jeremiah Weets, Machinist Mate 3rd Class Lance Carter, Seaman Douglas Young, Information Systems Technician Chief Angela Koogler, Electronics Technician 3rd Class Michael Jones, Seaman Richard Cassube, Fireman Recruit Jose Diaz, Seaman Brian Smith, Seaman Recruit Tevin Banks, Seaman Apprentice Joshua McLaughlin, and Seaman Juan Lugo joined Seaman Recruit Ryan Witkop as graduates with distinction.

    Basic Enlisted Submarine School is a six-week introduction to the basic theory, construction and operation of nuclear powered submarines. In preparation for an assignment, sailors receive instruction on shipboard organization, submarine safety and escape procedures.
