Former Coast Guard Academy cadet gets 8 years in prison for sexual assault, extortion

New London — Anthony Livingstone, a former member of the Coast Guard Academy Class of 2016, was sentenced to eight years in prison Friday for sexual assault, extortion and conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman.

Livingstone also was dismissed from the Coast Guard. He was suspended from the academy on Dec. 1, 2015, "shortly after" being charged and was reassigned to Air Station Cape Cod, according to the academy. He was found guilty of the charges Thursday and sentenced Friday at his court-martial trial, which started Oct. 26.

He has the right to appeal his sentence and conviction.

Livingstone, a native of Plainfield, N.J, assaulted another cadet multiple times at the academy in September 2015, according to Coast Guard officials. Afterward, officials say, he threatened others in an attempt to prevent them from speaking about the incidents and from cooperating with law enforcement.

No further information on the assault was available.

He is the second former academy cadet to be charged with sexual assault in recent months.

In September, Michael Shermot of Shillington, Pa., also a former member of the Class of 2016, was found guilty of sexual assault in a separate case. Shermot was sentenced to one year in prison and was dismissed from the service. He also has the right to appeal his conviction and sentence.
