Preston VFW to host fundraiser to benefit Cape Verdean Veterans Memorial Project

Preston — Cmdr. George Baldwin and members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9452 have donated the use of their facilities to host The Cape Verdean Veterans Memorial Project Fundraiser. The fundraiser, which includes hors d'oeuvres and cash bar with Music by d'Allegro, will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Sept. 9. Tickets are $30 per person.

The fundraiser, to install a monument in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in recognition of the contribution of Cape Verdean veterans who served in the U.S. armed forces, will honor and memorialize Cape Verdean vets in the Norwich area.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to the Project in Loving Memory of Manuel Michael Cardoza Jr., known as "Fato," who passed away on Oct. 8, 2016. Fato was a proud Korean War vet and a dedicated member of the VFW.

Post 9452, which has been in operation for 56 years, fosters camaraderie among U.S. vets of overseas conflicts. Baldwin, the commander, stated that Fato represented "the world" to the post and his passing is a tremendous loss to them.

Tickets can be obtained by contacting Roberta J. Vincent (860) 705-3176; Alfred Gonsalves (860)917-9586; Diane Santos (860) 303-6495 and the VFW (860) 886-1313. The deadline for advance ticket sales is Sept. 2.
