Gorgeousness, thy name is "The Light Between Oceans." The harshly beautiful landscape of an isolated island is lovingly framed and photographed. The exquisite faces of Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender are fairly caressed by the camera. But then, alas, there's the story. It is melodramatic and often strains credulity, as it details newlyweds who, living on an island where he is a lighthouse keeper, lose two babies to miscarriage. The wife becomes despondent — until a rowboat washes up with a dead man and a live infant. She wants to keep the child, but he (and we) know the truth will come home to roost. The plot may be contrived, but Vikander and Fassbender make it all feel raw and honest.
