DVD tip: "Cafe Society" is a feather-light diversion
DVD tip
Café Society
This is a wisp of a movie. It's set in a nostalgic version of old (in this case, 1930s) Hollywood. What's most striking about this comedy is the look — the opulent sets, the gilded lighting, the lush costumes. You'll want to step into the gorgeousness of it all. Jesse Eisenberg plays a guy who gets a job with his Hollywood-agent uncle (Steve Carell) and falls for the uncle's secretary ... who also happens to be his uncle's mistress. Kristen Stewart is a revelation in that role. On screen, she has often come across as brittle, but she's warm, engaging and funny here. "Café Society" might be a lesser work in the Woody Allen canon, but if you're searching for a feather-light diversion, this might satisfy your cravings.
