Movie tip: I love "The Big Sick"

    The Big Sick

    Movie tip

    The Big Sick

Finally! A movie this summer I really love! “The Big Sick” is a romantic comedy of sorts, but it’s also plenty dramatic. It’s based on the real story of comedian Kumail Nanjiani, who dated Emily Gordon, but they broke up over his unwillingness to introduce her to his traditional Pakastani parents (traditional as in, their son needed to wed a Pakastani woman). Emily got ill and ended up in a medically induced coma. Kumail stayed with her, bonded with her parents, and, after she recovered, the duo resumed dating and have now been married for a decade. Although the last quarter of the movie should have been significantly trimmed, “The Big Sick” is just a pleasure — funny, heartfelt, insightful, kind to all its characters. Zoe Kazan beams as Emily, and Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as Emily’s parents (who would have imagined them as a married couple!) are worth their own sequel.
