Rhode Island man accused of conspiring to help Islamic State group appears in court
Boston — A Rhode Island man charged with conspiring to help the Islamic State group by plotting with two others to kill U.S. citizens has made an initial court appearance in Boston.
Twenty-four-year-old Nicholas Rovinski, of Warwick, did not enter a plea at Friday's hearing.
The judge scheduled a detention hearing for June 19 to decide whether Rovinski would be held without bail until his trial. Prosecutors say he poses a threat to public safety.
Prosecutors say Rovinski and 25-year-old David Wright, of Everett, Massachusetts, conspired with a Boston terror suspect. That man, Usaama Rahim, was killed last week by terror investigators who had him under 24-hour surveillance.
After the hearing, Rovinski's lawyer declined to comment.
Rovinski's mother said earlier Friday that the allegations against her son aren't true.
