Rhode Island to crack down on impaired boating

PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island law enforcement agencies are cracking down on impaired boating.

Over the next couple weekends, State Police and the Department of Environmental Management will be patrolling the state's waterways.

Authorities say the goal is to reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes and fatalities. They also hope to educate people on the dangers of using alcohol and drugs while boating.

The U.S. Coast Guard says there were 40 crashes and three deaths involving recreational boats in Rhode Island last year.

Officers will be searching for boaters who have a blood-alcohol content above .08.

Violators face a fine of up to $500, community service and possible jail time. They will also have their right to operate a watercraft suspended for up to six months.
