"We Are The Best!" will make you happy

    Netflix

Netflix users rate what they've watched, and it's tempting to use high ratings as a guide. It's also risky, since the videos are self-selecting. Even the most idiotic WWF video gets five stars, since no one but a true believer would watch one in the first place. But "We Are the Best!" might be the best-reviewed movie of the past couple years - Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 97 percent approval rating - and that drew me in. Set in 1980s Stockholm, this 2013 Swedish movie romps along with two young teenage girls, Bobo and Klara (still young enough to buzz their hair and look like boys), who try to form a punk rock band. They have big ideas, but one problem: Neither can play an instrument. So they enlist a fellow junior-high outsider, a serious Christian named Hedvig, because she can actually play guitar. Friendship grows, and in time, they sort of sound like a band. But the movie really is about the energy, the optimism and the goofiness of being a 13-year-old in your own little world with your own little friends - and loving it. This is a movie that simply will make you happy.
