Chamber president launched ‘Coup de tourism’

Last week the Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce called a press conference to announce it would be taking over tourism promotion for eastern Connecticut. I was not informed of the intentions of the Eastern Chamber prior to the press conference. I learned of it after a reporter from The Day called to ask for a reaction. When asked what resources (money) they had and who would do the work, there was no answer.

I view this action as a “Coup de Tourism” − announce a take-over with no plan and no resources. The actions of Chamber President Tony Sheridan and the Eastern Chamber are an insult to the board and staff of the Eastern Regional Tourism District, who have been working hard to maintain a tourism promotional effort in light of the governor’s revocation of funds. Six years ago Sheridan declared his intention to take over tourism promotion when he recommended elimination of the tourism districts to the governor. He is now trying to implement his intention by declaration.

The Eastern Regional Tourism District owns by trade mark the name “Mystic Country” and legislation authorizing the district to exist remains in place. The Board and staff of the Eastern Regional Tourism District will continue to promote tourism in the 42 towns of eastern Connecticut and to provide essential services through partnerships and volunteer services:

Every effort will be made to secure the trademarked brand “Mystic Country” and protect the marketing efforts the district has faithfully pursued over the past 35 years.

Ed Dombroskas is the executive director of the Eastern Regional Tourism District.
