Lisbon man arrested after police pursuit

Plainfield — A Lisbon man was arrested early Thursday morning after he led local and state police on a car chase that ended when he crashed his car into a telephone pole at the intersection of Hopeville Road and the Exit 86 off-ramp on Interstate 395 in Griswold.

Michael McNamara, 23, was charged with engaging an officer in pursuit, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to maintain a proper lane.

Plainfield police said that shortly after 1 a.m., McNamara was driving a red 2003 Nissan Maxima when they observed him traveling erratically and at high speed on Norwich Road.

An officer attempted to stop the car at Academy Hill Road, but it continued on to Interstate 395 south. State police at Troop E in Montville were alerted to the pursuit as it continued into Griswold.

Plainfield police said they terminated the pursuit between Exits 87 and 86 due to excessive speeds.

A short time later, state and Plainfield police were notified of a single-car accident in Griswold.

When police arrived, McNamara, along with one of his two unidentified passengers, had fled the scene on foot.

McNamara was located and returned to the scene along with the other passenger. McNamara was placed under arrest by Plainfield police.

    No injuries were reported.

McNamara is scheduled to appear in Danielson Superior Court on March 23 after posting a $1,500 bond.

State police also are expected to lodge charges against McNamara and his two passengers.
