Ledyard – Iron Street (Route 214) was closed for more than five hours Thursday after a minivan hit and snapped a utility pole, leaving the pole and wires dangling over the vehicle. 

The accident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. between Spicer Hill and Route 117 and temporarily knocked out power to dozens of homes. Firefighters from Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire companies responded with police to find the occupant conscious and alert. 

Ledyard Fire Assistant Chief Jonathan Mann said the snapped pole was hanging over the vehicle, held up by the live wires. Eversource Energy, formerly known as Connecticut Light & Power, was notified and firefighters waited for power to be cut before removing the female driver. 

The driver, whose injuries appeared to be minor, was taken by ambulance to the hospital for evaluation. 

Police were not immediately available to provide any further information about the cause of the crash. At 9 p.m., Route 214 remained closed and Eversource Energy was working to replace the utility pole.
