VIDEO: New London firefighters contain blaze at multi-family home

New London firefighters work the scene of a two-alarm fire Wednesday at 73 Riverview Ave., New London.

New London — A two-alarm fire on Wednesday displaced at least eight people from a multifamily home at 73 Riverview Ave.

With strong winds working against them, New London Fire Chief Henry Kydd said firefighters were able to contain the blaze, and most of the damage, to the top two floors of the three-story structure.

Firefighters had arrived to find smoke showing from the third floor of the building. Firefighters fought flames with hoses from the interior and cut holes in the roof to ventilate the smoke and heat. Kydd said one of the obstacles encountered during attempts to ventilate was a second roof built atop the original.

    No injuries were reported.

At least eight people were living in the home. The Red Cross responded with volunteers to aid with emergency needs for the displaced, which included several children.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Built in 1894, public records show the home is owned by Isabel Brown.
