Stonington — Firefighters from several area departments were able to quickly bring under control a structure fire on Route 184 Wednesday afternoon, but not before it destroyed a residential garage.

The Wequetequock, Stonington, North Stonington and Ashaway fire departments responded to the scene, where they were able to prevent the garage fire from spreading to a home about 20 feet away. The heat from the fire, which first was reported at 3:30 p.m., melted siding on the house.

Stonington police said the residents of the house at 731 New London Turnpike, near the North Stonington border, were in the home at the time of the fire — but not in the garage. The home is owned by Kevin and Melissa Breault, according to town records.

The residents were able to remove vehicles from the 1,100-square-foot garage before it was engulfed.

    No injuries were reported.
