Norwich — The search for a 17-year-old kayaker who went missing late Sunday in the waters of the Shetucket River resumed early Tuesday morning and ended unsuccessfully at dusk.

Karl Joseph, a junior at Norwich Free Academy, has been missing since late Sunday, when witnesses said his kayak capsized about 30 feet from shore behind 751 N. Main St. Two bystanders unsuccessfully attempted to rescue Joseph. The kayak was later found about 100 yards north of the Greeneville Dam.

Geoffrey P. Serra, director of Communications & Public Affairs at Norwich Free Academy, said in a statement that the school's crisis management team met and appropriate services and support are available to students, teachers and staff.

"As the search resumes with daylight this morning for missing person, Karl Joseph, an eleventh grader at Norwich Free Academy, the entire NFA community holds him, his friends and family in their thoughts and prayers," the statement said.

Norwich Public School Superintendent Abby Dolliver said Joseph has a younger brother and a cousin in the public school system.

"We are offering support to both of them," she said.

Peter Camp, assistant principal at the Teachers' Memorial Middle School, had Joseph as a student for three years as a teacher at Kelly Middle School and described him as a cheery, outgoing student with a good sense of humor.

"He had a great sense of humor and was always quick to help another student," Camp said. "My heart goes out to him and his family."

The search for Joseph began at 10:09 p.m. Sunday and included local and state police divers, along with personnel from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. A state police helicopter, Trooper 2, aided the state police dive team from the air on Tuesday.

State police spokesman Sgt. Shane Hassett said the search would resume on Wednesday. DEEP spokesman Dennis Shane said Norwich police are handling the lead investigation but DEEP will perform a boating accident reconstruction report for police.
