Attorney gets suspended sentence, probation for role in attack on ex-boyfriend

A Danielson attorney received a fully suspended prison sentence and three years of probation Wednesday after pleading guilty to driving her ex-husband to a Killingly home where he attacked her ex-boyfriend on June 10, 2014.

The case of Jennifer Doerr-Hicks, 35, was transferred from the Windham Judicial District to New London Superior Court to avoid any potential conflicts of interest with attorneys in her area.

Doerr-Hicks pleaded guilty to accessory to third-degree burglary under the Alford Doctrine, which indicates she does not agree with the state’s version of the case but does not want to risk a harsher sentence if convicted at trial.

Prosecutor David J. Smith said that Doerr-Hicks, who had broken up with her boyfriend a day earlier, spent the day drinking with her ex-husband, 38-year-old James Hicks, before driving Hicks to the victim’s house and telling Hicks to beat up the ex-boyfriend.

The victim, who was sleeping when Hicks kicked in the door to his home and attacked him, suffered head wounds requiring 12 stitches, according to court documents.

Defense attorney Martin T. Weiss said Doerr-Hicks had made “very poor choices” that day and that alcohol was involved. He said he was convinced that all she is guilty of was criminal trespass, but that she didn’t want to risk a trial.

“She’s a very intelligent woman who has her whole life ahead of her,” Weiss said.

Judge Hillary B. Strackbein imposed the agreed-on sentence of four years in prison, fully suspended, followed by three years of probation.

Doerr-Hicks and her ex-husband will be required to pay the victim’s unreimbursed medical expenses.

Hicks’ case is pending in the same court. He is being held at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Institution in lieu of $100,000 on charges of first-degree burglary, third-degree assault, interfering with an emergency call and disorderly conduct.

He is due back in court on Friday.
