Heroin dealer to serve four years in prison

A Windsor man who had 6.9 ounces of heroin in his car when he met an undercover officer posing as a buyer in a Mohegan Sun parking garage in January will be sentenced in November to four years in prison.

Daniel Baez, 39, who is known as "Freak" by his associates, pleaded guilty Monday in New London Superior Court to possession of narcotics with intent to sell. He accepted an offer from the state involving a sentence of 12 years in prison, suspended after four years served, followed by three years of probation.

According to court documents, members of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force, working with state police and agents from the Department of Homeland Security, arranged for an undercover officer to purchase heroin from Baez on Jan. 6, 2015, after receiving information that he was distributing heroin in eastern Connecticut.

Once Baez arrived at the Indian Summer Garage at Mohegan Sun and parked next to the undercover officer's vehicle, detectives boxed in his car and searched it. They found 1,933 glassine envelopes, each containing about 1/10th of a gram of heroin. Baez also admitted he had about $15,000 in cash at his Windsor home. The detectives searched the home and found $15,740 in the master bedroom. The police also seized Baez's car, a 2003 Audi.

After accepting his guilty plea, Judge Hillary B. Strackbein warned Baez, who is free on a $100,000 bond, that she could sentence him to up to 15 years in prison if he does not show up for his Nov. 12 sentencing. Baez was represented by attorney Frank T. Canace. Senior Assistant State's Attorney Paul J. Narducci prosecuted the case.
