Two rescued off the coast of Old Saybrook

Old Saybrook — Two boaters were rescued Monday morning after their boat starting taking on water in Long Island Sound in the area of Long Sand Shoal.

The incident happened at 8 a.m., a Coast Guard official said. The Plum Island Ferry rescued the two people, who had to jump into the water as the boat was rapidly taking on water. The Coast Guard official said most of the 40-foot wooden vessel sank, except for a 5- to 6-foot section of the bow.

It is not clear why the boat started to sink. There were no reports that the vessel had struck anything, the Coast Guard official said.

Old Saybrook fire and emergency medical service personnel evaluated the pair.

    No further information was available.
