Groton Town police investigate fatal car accident in Mystic

Groton — Police are investigating a fatal car accident that occurred Thursday night on New London Road, just west of Ocean View Avenue in the Mystic section of town.

Groton Town Police Lt. John Varone said the accident happened at about 10:20 p.m.

Varone said it appears that the BMW Z3 was traveling westbound on New London Road when it left the travel portion of the roadway and struck a tree.

When emergency personnel arrived at the accident site, the unidentified driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle, Varone said.

The crash is being investigated by the Groton Town Police Accident Investigation Team. The Mystic Fire Department and the Mystic River Ambulance also responded to the scene.
