Norwich police arrest Groton woman who allegedly assaulted officer

Norwich — A Groton woman was arrested Friday morning after police said she drove off during a motor vehicle stop and then assaulted the officer when she was finally apprehended.

Sarah M. Lassiter, 27, of 310 Mitchell St., Apt. 3-G,  was charged with driving under suspension, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, assault on a police officer, interfering with police and possession of narcotics with intent to sell.

Sgt. Michael J. McKinney said around 2 a.m. police pulled over a car for a motor vehicle violation at Norwich Avenue in the area of South B Street.

He said the driver of the vehicle jumped and fled the scene on foot.

McKinney said Lassiter then jumped into the driver's seat and drove off, where she was later found on Terrace Avenue. McKinney said when the officer asked her to get out of the car, she slapped him.

McKinney said Lassiter was found in possession of 3.2 grams of cocaine that was packaged for street sale.

He said police have identified the driver and will file charges against him.

Lassiter is being held on bond, pending her arraignment Friday in Norwich Superior Court.
