Waterford police looking into burn incident at Ballestrini's Child Care Center

Waterford — Police said they will spend part of Wednesday at Ballestrini's Child Care Center after a young child was transported from the facility with burn injuries Tuesday afternoon.

Lt. Steve Bellos, who said police learned of the incident late in the day, wasn't immediately able to pass along any other information.

He said he expected to have more details available Wednesday.

Representatives of Ballestrini's couldn't immediately be reached.

Ballestrini's — which, according to its website, has been operating in the area since 1987 — also has locations in Niantic and Salem.

According to the state's eLicensing website, the Waterford location's infant/toddler program is the only aspect of any Ballestrini's operation that has been cited for violations in the past at least 15 years.

In 2013, the website shows, at least one complaint led investigators to find issues with the following regulations: Administration: ensuring the safety, health and development of children; administration: policies, plans and procedures; record keeping: responsibility for maintaining children's records; and administration of medications: medications other than nonprescription topical — storage & labeling.

The state put the center and its program on a corrective action plan as a result, according to the site.

The Waterford Ballestrini's is located at 90 Rope Ferry Road.
