    Waterford Police Department promotes two

Waterford — On Monday, two members of the Waterford Police Department will assume new roles.

Sgt. Timothy Silva, 41, and Investigator Nicole VanOverloop, 37, will become lieutenant and sergeant, respectively.

According to police Chief Brett Mahoney, Silva has been with the department for 17 years and has been involved with everything from bringing mobile data computers on board to participating in the town safety committee.

Mahoney said Silva, whom he described as "diligent and hard-working," will work the evening shift as patrol lieutenant.

VanOverloop, who's worked in the department for 13 years, spent time in patrol and as a youth officer before joining the Investigative Services Division, according to Mahoney.

Mahoney said VanOverloop was "instrumental" in launching the town's Juvenile Review Board and regularly participates in events that raise awareness for local charities. She'll be taking on the midnight shift when she becomes a sergeant.

The department chose to promote Silva and VanOverloop because they tested the best of those who applied, Mahoney said.

The test, he explained, involves a written test and multiple interviews.

"I'm proud of all our applicants," Mahoney said by email Wednesday evening. "It was a very tough decision, as we have great people that work here, and I look forward to seeing them all again in future promotional opportunities."
