    Fire extinguished in Norwich

Norwich ― Firefighters extinguished a fire Saturday at a multi-family mixed-use property at 277 Central Ave. that was found in the wall of an attached porch.

Norwich and Taftville firefighters were called out for reports of the fire at 1:50 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke at the rear of the building, Norwich Fire Battalion Chief Mark Benjamin said.

The home was evacuated and inside, Benjamin said firefighters encountered smoke on the second floor. Fire was eventually found in the walls on an enclosed exterior porch and was spreading to the porch framing.

The fire was under control in 15 minutes and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office. The building, which houses a first-floor church and second-floor apartments, remains habitable for all tenants, Benjamin said.
