New London — An early morning fire at a two-family home on Terrace Avenue displaced four people and injured a firefighter.

Battalion Chief Tom Curcio said fire crews responded to the fire at 42 Terrace Ave. at 3:09 a.m. He said it took about 20 minutes to get the fire under control.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they saw smoke coming from the first floor. When they entered the dwelling, they discovered that a kitchen fire had extended into a bedroom and the dining room.

Two adults and one child lived in the first-floor apartment, where the fire started. Curcio said smoke and carbon monoxide detectors went off and alerted the family of the fire. They all escaped without injury.

Firefighters had to alert and safely escort a man who lived on the second floor. He was unaware that there was a fire, Curcio said.

He said one firefighter was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with an apparent leg injury.

The first-floor apartment was extensively damaged by the fire while the second floor just sustained smoke damage.

Curcio said the American Red Cross assisted the tenants in finding them temporary lodging.

In addition to city firefighters, the Submarine Base Fast Team and Groton Ambulance also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
