Salem resident state troopers increase traffic enforcement

Salem — Traffic citations and written warnings here have soared over this time last year as a result of residents' complaints of speeding.

First Selectman Kevin Lyden reported at the Dec. 10 Board of Finance meeting that the town's resident troopers issued four times as many traffic citations and written warnings in November as compared to November 2014.

Troopers issued 120 traffic citations last month, up from 30, and 35 written warnings, up from nine.

The resident troopers have been paying particular attention to the Four Corners area and on Route 85 near Salem School, where one car was stopped for driving 62 mph through a school zone.

"People are learning 'don't mess around with Salem,'" he said.

Lyden said most people being stopped are not residents of Salem but rather drivers passing through the town on the way to New London or Route 2. The troopers have also been patrolling roads commonly used as shortcuts such as Music Vale Road, which connects Routes 82 and 85. Speeding was a commonly cited concern with a proposed farm brewery on the road.

"I think with the troopers out there more and giving citations, I think people will be more inclined to slow down," he said.
