Jewett City man to serve six years for firearms offenses

A Jewett City man was sentenced Wednesday to six years in federal prison for engaging in the "straw purchase" of a rifle and illegally possessing two stolen guns.

Brian Fletcher, 35, had pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Hartford to possession of firearms by a convicted felon.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office and court documents, authorities searched Fletcher's residence on Nov. 22, 2013, and found a Savage Arms, Axis XP .308 rifle, a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber VE Handgun and a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson Model 60 revolver, as well as multiple rounds of ammunition and weapon magazines.

The investigation revealed that the .308 rifle was purchased in January 2013 by another individual at a sporting goods store in Lisbon.

Fletcher engaged in the straw purchase and financed the transaction, which was captured on in-store surveillance video.

The .40 caliber handgun had been stolen from an owner in Oakdale, and the .38 caliber revolver had been stolen from an owner in Waterford.

Authorities said Fletcher made multiple unlawful efforts in 2013 to obtain rounds of different kinds of ammunition.

He had previously been convicted in state Superior Court of accessory to commit first-degree robbery, second-degree hindering prosecution, possession of a pistol without a permit, and attempted first-degree assault.

U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant sentenced him to 72 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
