Police: Man arrested with fraudulent credit cards and heroin at Fox Tower Hotel

Mashantucket — A man connected to an ongoing credit card fraud investigation was arrested Friday at Fox Tower Hotel with 20 fraudulent credit cards and 20 bags of heroin, according to tribal police.

Daniel M. Velazquez, 27, of Bronx, N.Y., was charged with criminal impersonation, fourth-degree larceny, two counts of first-degree forgery, possession of a controlled substance, 20 counts of theft of credit cards, 20 counts of unlawful completion or reproduction of credit cards, illegal use of a credit card and receipt of money, goods or services obtained by illegal use of credit card.

Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police said Velazquez checked into the hotel Friday using the alias Anthony Ortiz, the name of a suspect whom they were investigating for credit card fraud.

According to police Chief William Dittman, tribal police started looking into Ortiz about two weeks ago, when a credit card he used allegedly turned out to be fraudulent after Ortiz had left.

On Friday, hotel staff notified tribal police that Ortiz had checked in and police found him in his hotel room.

During their investigation, tribal police said they found a machine that makes credit cards, two counterfeit $100 bills, 20 fraudulent credit cards and 20 bags of heroin.

Tribal police said they also charged a second person, who was with Velazquez and whose laptop the two allegedly were using, on Friday.

Christina Decaro, 28, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was charged with conspiracy to commit all of Velazquez's charges.

Dittman said the investigation is continuing and that, at this time, tribal police aren't sure whether Velazquez and/or Decaro are suspected in any other credit card fraud cases.

Representatives from the Chief State's Attorney's Office and the state branch of the U.S. Secret Service are assisting in the investigation, he said.

Velazquez was held on $500,000 bond at the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police station and will be arraigned in New London Superior Court Tuesday. Decaro was also held on a $250,000 bond and is slated to be arraigned Tuesday.
