Ledyard police: Passenger in Thursday morning crash has died

Ledyard — Police on Tuesday confirmed that Brett Drake, the 22-year-old passenger involved in a serious wreck Thursday morning, has died.

Police Lt. Ken Creutz, who said he was unsure exactly when Drake passed away, said a medical examiner contacted the department Monday morning.

Officials at Hartford Hospital, where a Life Star helicopter took Drake after the accident, said they were unable to confirm when or whether Drake died.

According to a GoFundMe page created by Michelle Drake, Drake's mother, Drake died early Monday morning after a series of surgeries.

In the accident, which occurred on Shewville Road in the area of Morgan Farm, Meghean Walker, 19, of 5 Ann Wampey Drive, Mashantucket, lost control of the pickup truck she was driving around 8:35 a.m. and crashed into the end of a guardrail. Drake was a passenger in the truck.

According to police, the guardrail entered the cab, causing serious injuries to one of Drake's legs and trapping him in the vehicle.

He was taken to Hartford Hospital after members of the Ledyard Fire Department extricated him from the 1994 Ford Ranger.

Mystic River Ambulance crew members took Walker to the Pequot Health Center with suspected minor injuries, police said.

The GoFundMe page — originally created to add a half bath to the first floor of the Drakes' Ledyard home to prepare for Drake's return — now is seeking help with funeral costs.

As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, $3,420 had been raised.
