Ledyard — A Ledyard man was seriously injured Thursday morning on Shewville Road when the pickup truck he was in crashed into a guardrail.

Ledyard Police Lt. Ken Creutz said the crash occurred when the vehicle, driven by Meghean Walker, 19, of 5 Ann Wampey Drive, Mashantucket, veered off the road to the right and crashed into the very end of the guardrail.

The guardrail entered into the cab, causing serious injuries to the leg of passenger Brett Drake, 22, of 4J Lakeside Drive, who became trapped in the vehicle.

The Ledyard Fire Department had to extricate Drake from the 1994 Ford Ranger, and he was treated on the scene by personnel from Ledyard Ambulance.

A Life Star helicopter landed on Clark Field behind Gallup Hill School and transported Drake to Hartford Hospital.

Walker appeared to have minor injuries and was taken to the Pequot Health Center by Mystic River Ambulance, police said.

The truck was traveling southbound between Town Farm Road and Whitford Road when the accident happened about 8:35 a.m.

Creutz said there were no abnormal road conditions immediately apparent to police that would have contributed to the crash.

Shewville Road, in the area of Morgan Farm, was closed for several hours as police investigated the accident.

Ledyard's Accident Reconstruction Team was at the scene.
