Montville man charged with stealing $5,000 in tools from Old Lyme garage

State police last week arrested a Montville man who allegedly stole more than $5,000 in tools from an unlocked Old Lyme garage on at least two occasions last summer.

Johnathan Mazzella, 30, of 230 Gay Hill Road, Uncasville, was charged April 19 on a warrant in Westbrook with fourth-degree larceny after turning himself in to police.

According to Old Lyme police Officer Sal Milardo, who wrote the application for Mazzella's arrest, Robert J. Antoniac — who operates RJA Construction Co. out of the Stoneleigh Knoll property where the garage is — first noticed a slide saw missing from his garage on July 24 last year.

According to the application, Antoniac didn't make an official complaint at the time because he thought someone had borrowed the $650 saw.

On Aug. 7, though, Antoniac noticed three more saws, worth a combined $2,550, missing from the unlocked two-car garage, according to the application. He told Milardo the tools must have been taken sometime between Aug. 5 and Aug. 7.

On Aug. 18, Milardo wrote, Antoniac discovered six more tools — a chop saw, a drill, a sander and more — that were no longer in the garage. The total value of those items was $2,128, according to the application.

On the same day, the application states, Antoniac found one of his saws, which had "R.J.A." engraved on it, at Gold Star Pawn in Groton. According to Milardo, Gold Star Pawn co-owner Scott Rainey said Mazzella was a frequent customer and produced a sheet that showed Mazzella had pawned Antoniac's saw on Aug. 6.

Records show Mazzella has three past convictions for fifth-degree larceny out of Waterford, Clinton and Old Saybrook. He also has a case pending in Norwich Superior Court for third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and third-degree forgery.

According to police, Mazzella was released on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court May 3.
