Head of Pawcatuck company to be sentenced for failing to pay wages

The chief executive officer of AirWell Water Inc. in Pawcatuck is scheduled to be sentenced Monday in New London Superior Court to a suspended four-year prison sentence for failing to pay three employees a total of $113,000.

Robert G. Wood, 51, of Quaker Hill pleaded no contest in February to three counts of failure to pay wages.

Judge Hillary B. Strackbein is expected to sentence him to four years in prison, fully suspended, with five years of probation and to order him to pay restitution.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, three men who worked for the company as a research and development technician, a safety/training officer and a comptroller complained to the Connecticut Department of Labor that they were not fully paid for work performed in 2012 and 2013.

The Department of Labor met with Wood, who said they were owed less money than they claimed and agreed to pay them.

When Wood failed to make the payments, the labor department pursued state charges.
