New London — A  New London Superior Court judge on Monday set bond for a smiling Shaquan Seales, charged on Friday in the December shooting death of 29-year-old Gilberto Olivencia, at $1 million cash only, citing the "serious violence" involved in the crime.

Seales, 21, of 7 Griswold Court, Apt. 2, is facing charges of murder, first-degree reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and first-degree robbery stemming from that incident.

Seales smiled as he walked into court Monday, attempting to converse with people in the gallery before judicial marshals quickly intervened.

Seales' public defender cited the lifelong resident's lack of any criminal convictions, as well as his dependability to date in showing up for appearances in a separate pending case, as things that "should factor in" to the bond amount.

But Judge Omar A. Williams said the crime of "serious violence" was enough to cause the court to have concern for the safety of the public should Seales be released. He set the bond at $1 million cash only.

Because of a separate incident that also happened Friday, Seales is facing charges of possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and tampering with evidence.

According to police, Seales was "acting suspiciously" around 12:30 p.m. Friday in the area of Spring Street, where New London Police Department narcotics officers and members of the state police Statewide Narcotics Task Force-East were working.

Police said Seales went behind a house, where he allegedly dropped a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen from another town, before returning to the officers.

His bond was set at $200,000 cash or surety in that incident.

Just as he did when he walked in, Seales smiled as he exited the courtroom, at one point mimicking a photographer in the room.

His smiles drew an expletive directed at him from someone in the audience, while another called out, "Innocent till proven guilty."

Details about the shooting and Seales' alleged involvement weren't available as the arrest warrant is sealed.

Police found Olivencia on the front porch of 8 Grand St. after neighbors reported hearing gunshots shortly before 11 p.m. on Dec. 10, 2015.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Olivencia died of a gunshot wound to his chest and ruled his death a homicide.

Seales is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance or greater than half an ounce of cannabis, sale of illegal drugs, possession of a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia and operation of a drug factory, which were brought against him in a March 11 arrest in New London.

His case was transferred to the Part A courthouse on Huntington Street, where major crimes are heard. The case was continued to June 28.
