Feds charge two in Griswold teen’s fatal overdose

Federal authorities have charged two people with supplying the heroin that caused 17-year-old Olivia Roark to fatally overdose in a Groton motel on Memorial Day Weekend.

Adele Bouthillier, 42, who was staying with Roark and another woman in Room 106 of the Flagship Inn & Suites, and Ramon “BI” Gomez, 40, of Uncasville, who allegedly arranged for Roark to stay with the two prostitutes and advertise on Backpage.com, each were charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, distribution of heroin and conspiracy to distribute heroin.

Bouthillier told authorities she obtained the heroin from Gomez, her longtime drug dealer, on the morning of May 28 and used it with Roark and Melissa Crickmore.

All three women fell asleep about 1 p.m., and Bouthillier said when she awoke at 10 p.m., Roark was hanging almost completely off the bed. Bouthillier said the teen “appeared to just be really out of it and had vomit coming out of her mouth” and that she moved her to the floor near the bathroom.

Roark remained unresponsive, but Bouthillier did not call 911 until 2:36 a.m., according to the affidavit.

First responders administered Narcan and started CPR, but Roark could not be revived and was pronounced dead at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Gomez, who has a lengthy criminal record that includes sale of narcotics, had been charged by Groton Town Police on June 1 with promotion of prostitution and violation of probation.

He remains in state custody, where he is being held in lieu of $250,000.

Bouthillier appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joan G. Margolis and was ordered detained.

The federal arrests came on the same day that Roark's parents, Bob and Sherry Roark, said more than 600 people attended a memorial service for their daughter.

"We are hopeful there will continue to be more charges and more of these evil people will be taken off the street," Bob Roark said after learning of the new charges.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit written by Special Agent Peter J. Borysevicz of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Bouthillier spoke with Groton Town Police detectives on May 29 and provided a signed, sworn statement on June 1 that was videotaped.

She said Gomez had brought Roark to the motel on Friday, May 27, to engage in prostitution and requested that she stay with Bouthillier and Crickmore.

Bouthillier said she has purchased heroin and cocaine from Gomez on and off for the past 10 years.

Bouthillier said that on May 28, she called Gomez at Roark's request to buy heroin.

She said she ordered a gram of heroin for $70 and Gomez agreed he would deliver it to the room.

She said at 8:42 a.m., he called her from outside the room, where he was waiting in a red Ford Explorer, and she purchased the heroin.

The investigators used phone records to confirm her story.

Bouthillier said when she brought the heroin back to the room, Roark immediately began snorting the drug.

Bouthillier said she injected the heroin, and that Crickmore used it as well before they all "passed out" about 1 p.m.

Police recovered two used syringes in the room and one syringe loaded with heroin.

Gomez, interviewed by the DEA agent following his arrest, initially denied being at the Flagship motel on May 28, but later stated he was confused and admitted he was at the motel.

He said he supplied Bouthillier with cocaine on May 27 and returned to get paid on May 28.

"Gomez also stated that Bouthillier is the person who gave the heroin to (the teen) just prior to her death, thus Bouthillier is responsible and should be the one arrested for the crime," according to the affidavit.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Groton Town Police Department and the Regional Community Enhancement Task Force.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas P. Morabito.
